Today's idea: Critter Count Poster!
It is time to make a Critter Count poster for your wall!
Do you enjoy watching birds from your window? Do you ever see deer, squirrels, or other animals? This activity is a great ongoing project that the whole family can collaborate on.
Start with a big blank sheet of paper or poster board - write "Critter Count" at the top and decorate the top or the sides with drawings of animals (or whatever you want!). Leave space in the middle - this is where you will record the animals you see!
When you are done decorating, hand the poster up on the wall - you might choose to put it next to the biggest window in your house, or the window that overlooks the most wild part of your yard. Wherever you choose to hang it, make sure it is by a window that you have seen critters from before - you will only be recording the animals you see from this window!
Every time you see an animal, write it's name on your poster, or if you are not a writer you can draw a picture or have a friend help you with the letters. If you see that animal species again, add a tally next to its name!
Not sure what type of bird you saw? This is a great time to use your nature detective skills and your resources (guides, friends, internet searches, etc) to try to figure out what it was!
Bonus: Try to predict how many different types of animals you will see in one day, week, or month! Or, try to predict what animal you will see the most this week! Consider making daily observations and updating your list at a set time each day. This could become part of a morning ritual, or perhaps an afternoon snack time activity.
We would love to be kept up-to-date on your findings. Feel free to email or text us updates from your Critter Count! Wishing you happy adventures with your Critter Counting!
