The Wonder of Wild Spaces

Nature provides children with deeply interesting changes and mysteries to notice and investigate. It offers an endless invitation for children to wonder “why”.

“Look! I found a feather! I wonder who lost this feather!” exclaims a young Forest Kindergartner as he comes upon a downy feather on the forest floor.

The outdoors is uniquely suited to children’s active approach to learning. It engages the ‘whole’ child. It calls upon all of their senses and their entire body as they explore, make discoveries and work to understand the world around them. Children build a relationship with the natural world by spending time in wild spaces. Studies confirm that children who spend time outdoors in “wild nature activities” before the age of 11 grow to be adults who are more concerned about the environment.

Learning Outside’s partnership with Triangle Land Conservancy at its Irvin Nature Preserve makes ongoing natural learning opportunities possible for children of all ages in our community.  Many youngsters, who do not have access to quality outdoor learning experiences, are referred to Learning Outside’s scholarship program by local public school social workers and other local organizations that work with at-risk youth. And the number of youngsters we are serving just keeps growing! ~Posted by Wendy Banning~
